What is gdl ?
GDL (Geometric Description Language) is a geometric describing programming language, with of which help objects are created as image of the reality.
GDL objects are both used by users of the CAAD-Software ArchiCAD (from Graphisoft - a leading manufacturer of CAD system solutions in architectural sectors) as library parts, and by manufacturers of the building industries for presenting their products in electronic catalogues on CD or on web.
In both sectors of applications GDL has some clear benefits compared with other file formats.
Features and benefits of GDL
The revolutionary GDL technology creates library parts and complete object libraries and describes besides the 2D- and 3D-Data the properties (catalogue-no., price, product description, invitations of tenders, linkage to web pages etc.) of the objects too.
The parametric nature of GDL builds the main difference to other file formats. A single object can contain the variables for a whole product line or be rich of variations like size, color, material, form, number, position, animation effects etc., which can all be described and defined in GDL. The parameters can be set by the user and change -by doing so- the behavior and look of an object.
The file sizes are essential smaller than the file types of the competitions. This goes back to the programming language and the parametric nature of GDL. One single script can describe a big choice of real objects with all their different variations. The small file size is the key for enable users and customers the fast and uncomplicated download of the objects from the web.
GDL enables the compatibility with all important file formats like DWG (AutoCAD), DGN (MicroStation), 3DS (3Dstudio and Lightwave), OPT (Art.lantis Lightscape) and the standard file exchange format like DXF and IFC. Adapter technology for AutoCAD makes GDL for other disciplines out of the building industries attractive too.
You need less maintenance for GDL objects. It is an incredible advantage, if scripts are easy to understand and editable. Changes in design, function, materials choice or new variations are easy to be integrated in GDL scripts.
GDL is open for everyone. Every ArchiCAD license contains GDL as part of the package. The interest of architects, designers, 3D-modellers and programmers on GDL grows up daily.
